A 501c3 Nonprofit Corporation
On behalf of the SCR Team, we are truly grateful for all contributions! Our funding comes from private grants, partner grants, public donations, and fundraisers. Second Chance Ranch is operated by volunteers. We depend on the generosity and kindness of the community we serve.
Your contribution goes directly to the housing, feed, farrier and veterinary services for our horses. 100% of funds are used for overhead and program costs necessary to operate a successful corporation. Visit our HOME page for other news and campaigns
Meet Rio, a 20 yr old thoroughbred gelding. He came from a tragic beginning, orphaned and rescued by SCR at just 4 months old. He was an awkward runt, with crooked legs and dropped fetlocks (DSLD).
Flash forward to now.... he towers at a stunning 17h, straight legs, flowing wavy mane. This duckling became a swan. He has lived his entire life with horses transitioning in and out of SCR. He represents all that we are.
Today he is at WSU hospital with a serious condition requiring surgery. Rio has a non-cancerous mass called "Ethmoid Hematoma/Cyst" in his sinus that grew very rapidly. They had to do a tracheotomy and insert a breathing tube, which actually gave him a lot of relief. He's a lot more comfortable, able to eat easier.
We covered the $1800 for a CT and bloodwork. The surgery estimate is $4,000 - $5,000. The prognosis is likely that he will fully recover and have many more quality years of life.
Like Clyde, Gunner, and Mixo, who all recovered because of your help allowing us to get them Veterinary care, how do you put a price on a creature who has spent their entire life serving people, even saving lives?
Please, let 2025 start off with a miracle! For those of you who follow SCR, you know we have had unprecedented vet bills since Sept. Each of these horses deserve the care and respect as if they are "the only" horse in the barn.
UPDATE 1/1/2025
Full Recoveries!
As many of you know, we have had an unprecedented number of veterinary emergencies since September, 2024. More than the last 7 years combined! With a large herd of 40 senior horses, we typically have an surprisingly low incident rate. When it rains it pours!
Clyde had a stall accident resulting in a life-threatening injury to his shoulder joint. He was in the ICU for 3 weeks. He was not expected to survive or ever fully recover. He defied medicine and not only survived, he IS fully recovered to perfect soundness. His bill totaled more than $18,000 and we owe $7,400.
Mixo had two colics within two weeks and spent a total of 5 days in ICU. He is fully recovered and his generous prior owner paid all of his bills. Paid in full.
Gunner had a mysterious injury - a deep laceration to his neck that nicked his jugular vein and damaged the saliva gland. He was definitely not expected to survive surgery, but he did! He his home and 90% recovered. It will take time for the salivary gland to repair itself, but he is out of the woods and will make a full recovery. His bill was partially paid by two prior owners. The amount still owing is $3,000.
These three horse's journeys are a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the irreplaceable role that animals play in our healing and growth. Their stories aren't just about overcoming injury and illness, it's a testament to the power of second chances, the strength found in community, and the unspoken bond between humans and animals that can change lives in ways words cannot capture.
Through their work at Second Chance Ranch, these horses, along with the rest of the herd, have been captivating hearts and changing lives, a beacon of hope, a catalyst for change, and a life-saving companion for many facing their darkest moments.
It's impossible to put a price on the invaluable contributions they have made to our Suicide Intervention, Military Support Group, and kids/family programs. The impact is truly immeasurable. As you all have rallied to support these cherished therapy horses, we're not just funding their recovery, we're investing in a legacy of hope, healing, and transformation that he represents.
No gift is too small. Any amount you can contribute will make an impact on this cause. THANK YOU for your generosity and kindness toward Clyde!
Any donations that surpass the cost of current vet bills will be spent on veterinary needs of our other horses (Clyde is part of a herd of 43 retired sport horses).
