These horses are in various stages of training and available for adoption. We
welcome potential adopters to be a part of the training process if they choose.
We require that any adoptor ride and visit the horse several times before making a final decision.
We also like to visit where the horse will be housed. If the horse turns out to
not be a good match for you, per contract, we purchase the horse back.
For these
reasons, we do not adopt outside of Washington or Oregon.
Note: Adoptions fees are based on the horse's
health, soundness and training, typically ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. All
fees are negotiable.

COURAGEOUS JOURNEY (C.J.)

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 7 years
Height: 16.3h
|
C.J. got his name because his dam was
Courageous Pat. She died when he was just 5 weeks old. He is a
kind hearted horse. Very, very smart! Gorgeous movement, perfect
for dressage. ANY person, of any age could ride C.J. The
ideal home for him would be with someone who has at least one
other horse and time to continue his training. He loves trails,
too. |
KAPTNWICE

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 6 years
Height: 16.3h
|
Kaptnwice is by Katowice, and has Buckpasser
on the dam's side. one of Washington's top breeding stallions.
He came off the Emerald Downs race track in September, 2008 -
perfectly sound! A stunning mover - gentle hearted, but
powerful, and a lot of horse. He is definitely a jumping and
dressage prospect, but would do best with some time relaxing on
the trails or simple flat work before going into a new career. |
BEDFORD ROAD

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.2h
|
Bedford Road is by Miesques Son and out of
Lake Brook, making him a grandson of the great "Salt Lake
(Deputy Minister)."
Bedford had a stall accident at the race
track which resulted
in a broken distal sesamoid bone. He was sent to a specialist in
Oregon for surgery - Dr. Laura Palmer performed a miracle.
Bedford is completely sound and has been riding trails and
western pleasure for over a year.
He does require a confident and experienced
rider. Bedford is a kind and affectionate horse, but he is also
an athlete and a powerful mover.

RIO

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 2 years
|
Rio is a Washington bred gelding who was at the WTBA Winter Sale
- he was one of many who didn't get a bid. Racing is not in
Rio's future due to his size. Although well proportioned and
very healthy, at 2 yrs old he is still the size of a yearling.
Probably a slow grower... I expect he will top out at
around 15.3 when full grown.
Rio needs a couple of years to grow, and in the meantime, an
experienced handler that can keep up on his ground manners. He
was gelded a few months ago, and is currently very sweet and
easily managed.

Nevada Swifty

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 5 years
Height: 15.3h |
This little cutie
pie is loads of fun! He is by Soft Gold, and expected to grow to
at least 16h. He was in training at the track but never raced
and was taken off the track sound. Swifty has a good mind, super
flashy movement, honest and willing worker. Easy to get along
with! Hunter/jumper prospect or trails. |

Classy
Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 5 years
Height: 15.3h |
Update 6/1/08: shortly after Classy was
put back under saddle to be transitioned to a trail horse, the
vascular problem returned. It is a rare condition where certain
veins in his legs enlarge. It does not effect his performance.
He is sound and comfortable, however, we are working with WSU
veterinarians to have more information on this condition, and
how limiting it may be. Classy is by
Classic Sky, a Canadian champion with career earnings of over
$3.3 million (he won or placed in nearly every single race).
Classy raced in California and
Washington/Emerald Downs. He was not injured. He actually won
his last race, however, had to have a procedure on a blood
vessel that would prevent him from racing, but not from any
other sport.
He is a
very quiet and affectionate horse who would make a very good
trail mount, or western pleasure horse. He did not show interest
in jumping when we introduce him to that - it's something he
might pick up when he gains a little more confidence. He is
sound enough do to anything.
Classy is green in terms of learning arena
work, but very quiet on the trails. Not a hot or easily spooked
horse at all.

SLEWPY
BEFORE
TWO MONTHS LATER
FOUR MONTHS LATER

|
Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 14 years
Height: 16h
|
His registered name is Slewp Walker, by
Skywalker who had career earnings of over $2.2 million. His dam
was Slewping Beauty from the Seattle Slew line. Slewpy was
Breeder's Cup Nominated.
The person who owned Slewpy after his racing career became ill
and gave him to a couple (The Earl's in southern Washington) who
she believed would take good care of him. He was handed off in
good health. When she went to check up on him, she was horrified
to find that all of the animals in their care were in miserable
condition. She contacted Animal Control in an attempt to get
Slewpy back. Eventually he was confiscated with numerous other
animals and the Earls were charged with animal cruelty.
SCR was contacted by Strawberry Mt. Rescue
(Oregon), who worked with animal control to place the horses. Finally, at 14 yrs old,
Slewpy landed here at
Second Chance Ranch. It is obvious this horse has seen a lot.
Many of his "herd" and friends died of starvation or illnesses.
He won't forget what he went through, but he also will never
forget or take for granted the love and attention he is
receiving now.
He appears to be sound, and has beautiful
confirmation. Once his weight is back, and he has had time to
regain health and confidence - he will most likely make a
wonderful trail mount!
Special thanks to Darla at Strawberry Mt. Rescue – they do a
great job!!!

DREAMER
|
Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 4 years
Height: 17h
|
Dreamer is by the legendary Slewdledo - one of my favorite
Thoroughbred pedigrees.
At 3 years old Dreamer was already towering 17h tall! His racing
career was cut short by an injury to the knee. He is recovering
nicely and very comfortable, however we are not sure what his
abilities will be in the future. This gentle giant has a heart to
match his size. He is full of life and personality - Dreamer adds
life to the barn.
We anticipate that he will be a permanent resident - and I am in no
hurry to see him go. However, if the perfect situation were to come
up for him, we will consider adopting him out.

WESTERN JOURNEY

|
Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.1h
|
Western Journey is by
Gone West (Mr. Prospector) and out of Sweet and Low (Seattle Slew).
He was taken off the race track at Emerald Downs 4 years ago...a
Rolex quality jumper, but after a year of jump training his career
was halted due to Ringbone in both front pasterns. He was given back
to the race trainer who pastured him for the next three years.
Westin (stall name) came to SCR a month ago and we xrayed to
evaluate his status of soundness. Unfortunately, the ringbone has
gotten worse.
Westin is otherwise
very healthy, very smart, sweet, and has a great personality...good
with other horses. He needs a pasture pet and possibly light trail
riding home. We love this horse to peices! He deserves a person of
his own to love and care for him.
We are currently
looking into all veterinary treatments to keep him comfortable.
